A chapter in the story of an evolving online life:

2008 was the last time I updated this blog. That's the same year I broke down and joined Facebook. My decision to join Facebook rests squarely on the shoulders of J.J. Abrams. In 2007 I had been drawn into the pre-release online search for clues about his movie Cloverfield. I enjoyed the quest for information, the fake MySpace profiles and fake company/product websites. A well-rounded fictional universe was created to supplement Cloverfield and seems to have since gone to waste. The fictional Cloverfield world may even contain more compelling story ideas than any that aired on LOST. And frankly, I enjoy giant building-stomping monsters a helluva lot more than mystical smoke creatures.

The point is, the Cloverfield pre-movie experience was fun. It was well-enough played that I still sometimes expect more to come of it. In fact, I hope more comes of it, one day. And Star Trek was on the horizon. I grew up with Trek, old-school Trek. As kids some of us made phasers, communicators, and tricorders out of slabs of corrugated cardboard held together with duct tape and controls drawn on with buzz-inducing El Marko permanent markers. We weren't old enough to know about getting high off markers. Our buzz was all about backyard landing parties, Romulans hiding in the bushes and Klingons laying ambush in the trees.

In anticipation of Star Trek, with the Cloverfield pre-game under my belt, I honestly expected another online treasure hunt, and someone (Paramount? JJ? Others?) made a decision to use Facebook as the exclusive official social point of contact. After fake MySpace profiles for Cloverfield, I fully expected some likewise fun and weirdness on Facebook. Simply put, I was duped. I joined Facebook, a site I had been actively avoiding and have since neglected this blog and many other activities I had enjoyed prior to that hideous trickery.

As it turned out, Facebook was, at that time, becoming the place to be if one was online, so I doubled-down, creating not only a personal profile, but one for the family business, Bonnett's Books, realizing that Fb is, for the time being, a necessary evil.

So, yes, sadly, I'm spending far too much time on Facebook, primarily for the shop, occasionally for myself, but only in cases in which Fb serves my needs, rather than the other way around.

I may be back here, I hope so, but maybe not. Time will tell.
